Key Learnings

  • The creation of ‘The Hub’ began with the conduction of research and needs assessments to identify local service needs and gaps, as well as local youth needs (as identified by current youth and adults who experienced struggles as youth).
  • Findings highlighted primary recommendations to a) develop an inclusive space for youth with input from a youth committee, b) ensure the presence of authentic workers, and c) consolidate community resources for wraparound youth care.
  • Through the operation of multiple advisory committees and a combination of sustainable funding streams, The Hub continues to provide an available space for all youth between the ages of 16-24 to have their needs met.

Identified Gaps in Research, Practice, and/or Policy

  • Youth are looking for opportunities to engage in meaningful work and maintain a stable income. More agencies should consider offering vocational training, or opportunities for work through a social enterprise model that develops work skills and provides income for both youth and the host agency.
