Frayme supports the implementation of research knowledge into practice. Our primary goal for this grant stream is to support youth mental health and substance use (YMHSU) stakeholders, particularly Inuit, First Nations, and Métis-led youth-serving organizations and their affiliated Integrated Youth Services initiatives. We aim to promote and share the implementation stories of two-eyed seeing policies, programs, services, and initiatives that have proven beneficial for youth. By scaling and disseminating this valuable knowledge, we strive to inform and inspire other service efforts in the field.
Lii Michif Otipemisiwak (LMO), a Delegated Aboriginal Agency, envisions a life of love, honor, and dignity for Métis children, youth, and families. Our comprehensive services include Elders Council, Early Childhood Development, Family Support, Child Safety, Youth Services, Child and Youth Mental Health, and Kikékyelc (housing for youth and Elders).
Life Promotion Protocol
The life promotion protocol is a community-driven, collaboratively created, connection-oriented, strength-based, and culturally grounded response to suicide prevention.
How will you incorporate two-eyed seeing approaches in your project?
We used two-eyed seeing to develop the Life Promotion Project, such that all forms of knowledge are respected and included. Some knowledge was drawn from published literature and reports; some was drawn from Elders, youth, and other cultural knowledge keepers. The LPP embraces two-eyed seeing to bring forward the best of Indigenous ways of knowing and Western ways of knowing as we seek to transform approaches to suicide prevention for Indigenous youth.
Connection & Compassion Community Foundation fosters community connections and compassion through integrated outreach services for at-risk youth aged 14-25. We collaborate with community organizations, partners, and stakeholders to deliver a collaborative service model that supports our clients' comprehensive continuum of care.
Family Gatherings
Family Gatherings will be a space for youth to share recovery and cultural healing stories, empowering them to incorporate their learning into their own mental well-being.
How will you incorporate two-eyed seeing approaches in your project?
Two-eyes-seeing approaches will be incorporated by collaborating with Indigenous-focused supports and "western" service providers towards supporting youth with mental health or substance use concerns.
Gwekwaadziwin Miikan, Youth Mental Health & Addiction Program, is a 3-phase program offering land-based treatment, live-in aftercare, and community aftercare programs for young adults 19+; it weaves traditional culture with therapeutic best practices and outdoor experiential learning.
A Two Eyed Seeing Approach to Land Based Healing
To share the story of Gwekwaadziwin while allowing individuals to learn from both the success and challenges related to Land-based healing that the project has faced.
How will you incorporate two-eyed seeing approaches in your project?
Gwekwaadziwin has been viewed by clients, their families, communities, and organizations as a pioneering model to be scaled nationwide. This opportunity will allow us to share the story of Gwekwaadziwin and how we have successfully blended Land Based cultural programming with Western addiction methods like Opiate Replacement Therapy. This grant will enable us to amplify our vision for healthy and prosperous Anishinabe communities.
Huddle Broadway is an IYS Hub serving youth in Winnipeg's core, delivering a wide variety of services with the support of our network of partners, such as employment, housing, financial literacy, recreation, and more.
Great Big Recovery Stories
This evaluative program captures personal recovery stories of Inuit, Indigenous, and Métis youth, highlighting the transformative impact of their involvement at Huddle. Through a book of stories, illustrations, a quilt, and a social media campaign, youth will showcase their experiences and offer insights on future improvements.
How will you incorporate two-eyed seeing approaches in your project?
Through sharing circles and immersive storytelling activities, youth will learn the craft of storytelling and oral history by connecting with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Storytellers in Manitoba.
Home Base YK is passionately dedicated to supporting youth in Yellowknife, providing essential access to safe and supportive housing. We offer inclusive housing options, including a youth dorm, shelter, apartments, and a Youth Centre to support the growth and independence of young individuals.
Kitchen Talk /Table Talk
Kitchen Talk /Table Talk is a program where Indigenous youth in our programs come to learn or showcase cooking skills whilst indulging in conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
How will you incorporate two-eyed seeing approaches in your project?
This project combines Indigenous cultural knowledge and mental health care to explore the experiences of youth in Canada's north. Through workshops involving local youth, elders, community members, and mental health facilitators, this initiative aims to create a youth-led video essay highlighting how the program supports their mental health journey from an Indigenous cultural lens.
Safe Water Studios is a grassroots organization created by Indigenous youth and for Indigenous youth. Our team has focused on creating a safe online workshop space primarily for Indigenous youth artists. Our workshops have helped youth form a strong sense of community and express themselves creatively.
Safe Water Studios Community Wellness Project
We would like to engage Indigenous youth on the subject of mental health through building a safe online community for creative expression.
How will you incorporate two-eyed seeing approaches in your project?
Our current workshops operate primarily through an indigenous lens, we hope to merge this approach with western academic based research to provide a holistic understanding of personal and communal mental health for our team and more importantly our attendees.
It is important to Frayme that youth, caregivers, advocates, and those with lived or living experience are meaningfully engaged in the grantmaking process. For this Great Big Stories Grant, we relied on the expertise of 6 youth, caregiver, and advocate Groundbreakers to form the adjudication committee. After coming together to learn more about the grant itself and key concepts to be discussed in the review process, adjudicators independently reviewed grant applications over a 2-week period. We discussed the outcomes of this review process through two group discussions, with adjudicators having the chance to make a final vote on their top choices for the grant recipients. This final vote, along with important knowledge equity factors considered by Frayme (including geographical location), determined the successful recipients of the Great Big Stories: Two-Eyed Seeing Grant.
