We know we need to better integrate the expertise of youth, caregivers and advocates with lived experience of mental health and substance use, but as a system we are collectively challenged by a cycle of engagement that fosters advocacy without solutions, builds advocates without channels of impact and makes promises without purpose. Frayme has responded to this gap by building a knowledge equity and engagement-focus on the team, actively hiring with lived expertise in mind and integrating lived experience as a form of evidence through Groundbreakers, a new national network of youth, caregivers and advocates. Groundbreakers are experts in their communities, their causes, and their own life experiences. Most of all, they’re experts at being themselves. Today, Groundbreakers represents 130 experts from all across Canada. To help move our youth mental health and substance use sector forward and continue the dialogue about inclusion of lived experience and expertise, Frayme will share lessons learnt from our journey of embedding meaningful engagement (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) in all that we do, and discuss how Groundbreakers are being matched across Canada to better inform systems and services through their lived expertise.

Children and youth comprise 40% of the Indigenous population in Canada. These young people face significant health inequities compared to their peers, especially those living on-reserve. Data on health and well-being is needed to guide community policies, health services planning and evaluation that supports Indigenous communities on their path to health and well-being. This evidence to promote better health outcomes is lacking. This webinar will focus on the development of the Aaniish Naa Gegii: A Children's Health and Well-being Measure (ACHWM) to illustrate how the voices and experiences of FNIM (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) children and youth were central to conceptualizing and designing a tool that is being used to collect data needed to promote wellbeing in a range of Indigenous communities across Canada.
